Baphomet

“This enigmatic figure, known as Baphomet, was first described during the trials of the Templars, a medieval order of Crusader Monks accused of Heresy, witchcraft, and other crimes. The Order, founded in 1118 by nobleman Hughes de Payens, was the first of a number of “Military Orders.”
Originally conceived as a means of protecting Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem, the new order excited the public imagination, and they became extraordinarily popular. They were exempted from taxation, and had amassed great wealth and property by the 13th century. (…)
The interpretation of Baphomet pictured above was drawn by the nineteenth century occultist Eliphas Levi (Alphonse Constant), using elements from various descriptions. It was drawn with the head of a Goat, a human body with cloven feet and wings. According to Levi, it was a revelatory figure, requiring study to understand. This particular drawing is quite popular with Satanists and Ritual magicians, for varying reasons. Levi described the figure as:

This sign expresses the perfect harmony of mercy with justice. His one arm is female, the other male like the ones of the androgyn of Khunrath, the attributes of which we had to unite with those of our goat because he is one and the same symbol. Cross

Cthulhu

is a fictional cosmic entity created by writer H. P. Lovecraft and first introduced in the short story “The Call of Cthulhu”, published in the American pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1928. Goat of Mendes (Sigil of Baphomet, Sabbatic Goat)

1. “The so-called “Mendes Pentacle” (sometimes, Mendez) or Sabbatic Goat emblem was first connected to Satanism in the nineteen sixties, falsely attributed to the nineteenth century occultist Eliphas Levi. This symbol is commonly confused with Levi’s depiction of the Templar icon Baphomet, which was never presented as a symbol of evil, but of harmony, redemption, and union with the divine. Nonetheless, the two have been confused so often it is nearly impossible to separate them in modern usage.
2. The name “Mendes goat” derives from a connection Levi made between the Templar Baphomet, the Goat of the witch’s Sabbat (as depicted in popular art of the time), and the Egyptian god Ammon, of Mendes, Egypt.  According to Levi, an emblem of fertility and sexual freedom.  Levi’s connection was spurious-the God in question was represented by a ram, not a goat- but the confusion has persisted.

Leviathan Cross (Brimstone/ Sulphur Nigrum)

This glyph, created by Anton Lavey, is one of the emblems of the Church of Satan. It has no registered usage before the 1960’s and it is also difficult to see it outside that context.
There is a common association to the alchemical element “Sulphur” but there is no evident connection between. As the alchemical “Sulphur” represents the concepts like the “Soul” or the “Internal Fire”; The “Leviathan Cross” has a less spiritual feeling. Some interpretations actually expose a sexual or carnal significance, according to the context of its usage.

Different viewpoints affirm that the “Sulphur” is an element common to many demonologic descriptions. The smell of sulphur is often related to demonic presences. To avoid any kind of misunderstanding, it should be more accurate to use the word “Brimstone” instead of “Sulphur” from alchemy.
Another curious association is found in the “Medicinisch- Chymisch- und Alchemistisches Oraculum” (a comprehensive listing of alchemical symbols from 1755) reveals a glyph with similarities with the Lavey’s symbol. The Sulphur Nigrum (Black Sulphur) could also be seen as an influence to the modern version.

Saturn

the planet Saturn represents the alchemical metal, lead. The image mimics the scythe of Saturn, the god of the harvest and time. Sulfur (inverted) with Moon.

variant of the Lavey’s symbol of sulfur. It has originally a strong connection with the male principle and sexuality – inverted, assumes the control of its impulses. Here, with the moon on top acquires the intuitive aspect, commonly associated to the female principe. That way, it finds a certain tone of balance.

Sulphur

one of the three primes or tria prima, according to Paracelsus, represents the Soul. It is many times associated with the Sun and the element of Fire as the masculine as active principle – the animus.

Sulphur-sun
