Social Media and Moral Panic

SKUN/A Categories,

We couldn’t start describing the design “Malleus Maleficarum” without an introductory note about what is actually the moral panic, comparing the witch trials from the XVI-XVIII centuries to contemporary events.

This false or exaggerated perception that some groups of people or cultural behaviours represent actual dangers to the society in general tend to evolve into discriminatory views and violent reactions, both verbal or physical in extreme cases. This social crisis and respective results seem to find patterns in the History of humanity. The atmosphere of terror and anxiety lived in the medieval times lead the Church to find a scapegoat responsible for all the tragic events lived then. The religious/ political propaganda applied is incredibly similar, in terms of effectiveness, to the method used during the times of World War II. Note that even the decadent social context seems to match.

What do we say about nowadays? It is undeniable that a pattern is visible and it scares me to observe the resemblance (mostly) to the pre WWII social instability that is often manifested also in the present times. And we already know the possible terrifying outcomes, if we don’t break the pattern.
Now, more than ever, it is evident the mass media‘s major role in fostering moral panic. There is no better way to spread fake news and conspiracy theories than our current means of communication, especially on the internet, the easiest way to access information on a global scale.
